RECORDING & REGISTRATION EXPLAINED

RECORDINGS

The foal owner has 1 year in which to Birth Notify the foal. On receipt by SAWHS of birth notification, horses will be recorded. Horses that are submitted after a year will be accepted but are charged more for the recording.

REGISTRATIONS

Registration requires that the horse be presented for Inspection of Licensing. After 3 years of age, a horse can be presented for inspection. The horse will then become registered. For stallions we refer to it as licensing.

Once Inspected a horse is categorized in the following registers:

1.) Primary Register is a Full Warmblood Register

  • Both dam & sire are inspected or

  • Has competed to the highest level

  • Has progeny competing at the highest level

2.) Secondary Register or developing register

  • Warmbloods have some conformational or height issues

  • Warmbloods have 3/4 or more Thoroughbred or Anglo Arab in pedigree

  • Thoroughbreds and Anglo Arabs who receive 70% or more at inspections

3.) Coloured Warmblood Register operates in exactly the same way with Primary and Secondary classification.

This register is open to horses of:

  • Broken colour such as Tobiano, skewbald, piebald (but not of Appaloosa type spots, blanket etc.) with three generations of proven breeding and

  • Dilute colours such as Palomino, Cremello, Buckskin, Champagne, Roan etc., with three generations of proven breeding.

4.) The Pre-register - is a section for horses that do not achieve the required 65% inspection pass mark.

WHY HAVE YOUR HORSE INSPECTED?

Inspections, which are organized and conducted by the various warmblood registries, are designed to improve the breed while guiding breeders, owners, and prospective owners.

General Inspections are for mares & geldings.

First Approval for Young Stallions - This is a presentation for the young unbacked or recently backed stallion, aged between 3 & 4 years old. It is to assist the breeder with deciding on the quality of the young stallion and whether or not to keep him entire.

Stallion License approval for breeding - Stallion must be presented within four years. If not presented for Full License by then, the title will revert to inspected status.

WHAT IF MY HORSE FAILS?

Horses are marked on proven criteria set by international standards & historical evidence. If a breeder, breeds something new, or never seen before or experimental or different from these criteria - Its not to say it won't be successful, however it poses a high risk for potential breeders.

If a Stallion fails, the owner can to prove their stallion via their progeny, or via the Stallions performance. If the stallion produces high preforming progeny or he himself preforms at a high level he will be rewarded with a full license and the SA Warmblood Society will advocate for the use of him for breeding.

It is not a common occurrence for inspection evaluations to be overturned, however there are exceptions. Horses can have a bad day, loose from a minor incident or from a specific mark made during an evaluation.

There is still an opportunity for the breeder to prove their horse/s if failed.

The inspection process is a model that aims to predict the competitive success of horses. Virtually all models can predict false positives and negatives, but the more experts that consider a problem the higher the chance of reaching an optimal solution. This was actually summarized mathematically by the Marquis de Condorcet. This showed that the chance of an optimal or accurate outcome improves as more people consider the problem IF the people possess the technical knowledge to make informed decisions.

The Society is the governing body for Warmblood horses in the Republic of South Africa. So the integrity of the breed needs to be maintained, and kept to a high stand.

STALLION INSPECTIONS OVERVIEW

Brief Explanation of the stallion licensing categories:

Fully  Licenced

Means the stallion achieved 75%  or more. The horses will have been presented In Hand and under saddle at the level of his present training.

First Acceptance

Means a young stallion not yet backed or just starting to be backed, that has received 70% or more In Hand. This includes loose movement or free jumping depending on whether Dressage or Jumping bred.  This horse has to be presented for the ridden section within 3 to 4 years to achieve a Full License. If not he becomes an Inspected horse.

Inspected

Means the stallion did not reach the level of 75% for stallion license but did get 65% or more. 65% is the minimum level for acceptance into the Stud Book. However as he has been presented to the inspection panel, his progeny will be accepted on to data base. The stallion can still achieve full licensed status by competing at the highest level or having progeny that compete at a high level.

Prospective

Is an old category not longer in use but it means the stallion did not get the required 75 % for a full license but got between 70 to 75 %. They were required to present 10 foals for assessment before being considered for Full License or to compete at a high level. Today these stallions will be considered ‘Inspected".

All stallions can qualify for Full License by competing at the highest levels or through successfully competing progeny.
