Mirror Foaling at Willow Stud

Willow Stud is located near Kathu. Kathu is the iron ore capital of the Northern Cape. It’s name means "town under the trees", after the Camel Thorn amongst which it is situated.

Sarah Matthews and Jaimei-Lee Le Roux have been building up their warmblood sport horse stud there for a number of years. This year they had two mares due to foal in October. Never in their wildest dreams did they expect them both to foal on the same day, one at 5.30 am and the other at 9pm.

Evolution (Euphoric Ashbank/ Starcutter xx) an impressive Chestnut mare who had jumped 1m30, was in foal to the acclaimed Emerald van ‘t Ruyteershof. While Elusive Fountain xx (Elusive Fort/ Counter Action/ Fine Edge) had been put to Escapade III (Escudo/ Graf Grannus) belonging to Pieter van Wyk.

These mares became close friends during their pregnancy Then on 12 October, Evolution went into labour and foaled down an elegant, long legged chestnut colt. With all the excitement of the day Elusive Fountain, heavily pregnant herself, looked on with adulation at the new baby.  Guess what? That evening it became clear she wanted to foal down. She gave birth to a splendid, black colt, leaving the stud so impressed with these two mares.
